Statement of Solidarity - World Languages Department

June 11, 2020

Black lives matter!

The World Language faculty add our voices to the many with love and solidarity and hope for change. Clearly our oppressive society is intolerable and is collapsing under the weight of its greed, environmental degradation, repression, and division. As language educators, we’ve dedicated our work lives to helping students build lasting bridges across lines of language, culture, race, nationality, and class. We’re committed to unity among all people. We stand firmly with the people protesting the horrible violence and disparity that people of color suffer in our society.

"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart."
Nelson Mandela
