Statement of Solidarity - Culinary Arts Department

The Culinary Arts Department would like to express our steadfast solidarity with our black/African American colleagues, students, and community members. We wish to share our deep sorrow and condemnation for the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the countless other humans who have lost their lives because of the racism so deeply embedded into the foundations of our country. We say loudly: Black lives matter.

Furthermore, we see the horrific legacy that slavery has left and we acknowledge the food apartheid in our country. We see the huge hurdles in the restaurant world that Black, Indigenous, and People of Color face in securing loans and financial backing to make the dream of being a restaurant owner come true. We acknowledge that restaurants and their kitchens are often not comfortable or welcoming places to Black/African American people. We humbly devote ourselves to working toward much-needed change through the power of food and education and commit to being an anti-racist department. We can do better and we will do better.
