President's Monthly Board Report - February 2016

President Chong gave the following report to the Board of Trustees at their February 9, 2016 meeting:

  • He attended and spoke at the Los Cien luncheon highlighting higher education. They also honored outgoing Vice President, Student Services Ricardo Navarrette and outgoing President, Sonoma State University Ruben Arminana, who are both retiring in June, as well as outgoing Superintendent of Santa Rosa City Schools Socorro Shiels. Dr. Chong thanked all of the Latino leaders in attendance at the luncheon, including the Manager, Southwest Santa Rosa Center Hector Delgado and Chief, Police Lorenzo Duenas who are on the Los Cien leadership team and are board members. He also thanked Trustee Fishman for attending on behalf of the Board.  
  • He met with Grant Davis of the Sonoma Water Agency, who is interested in partnering with SRJC to train next generation of potential employees of the water agency, making staff there more diverse.  
  • He thanked Board President Edgar for coordinating a meeting with the leadership at Cardinal Newman, with whom SRJC is working to increase concurrent enrollment.  
  • He mentioned that Senior, Vice President Academic Affairs Mary Kay Rudolph will be reviewing the District's Accreditation Follow-Up Report for ACCJC.  
  • In March Dr. Chong will be serving on an accreditation team at the Los Angeles Pierce College, headed by Joel Kinnaman.  
  • On Feb. 5 Dr. Chong met with 70 high school counselors from Sonoma, Napa, Marin and other local areas. He thanked Michelle Booher-Poggi for coordinating such incredible outreach to high schools. He also said that he looks forward to additional outreach to middle schools as well.  
  • He welcomed Judy Sakaki, who was selected as the new President of Sonoma State University.  
  • He announced Professional Development Day, which will occur on Thursday, Feb. 11 on the Petaluma Campus for the first time.  
  • He gave an update on the status of work on redistricting, saying that Senior Vice President Doug Roberts is working on next steps with School and College Legal Services advisors. Dr. Chong said that he would come back to the Board with further updates.  
  • He finished by announcing the SRJC Second Annual Wine Classic on Sunday, Feb. 21. He thanked Trustee Kunde for working on the event.
