PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY BOARD REPORT- JUNE 2017

President Frank Chong gave the following President's Report at the June 10, 2017 Board meeting:

  • He attended many graduations over the last month, including the Police Academy Graduation, Nursing, College to Career and Gateway to College.
  • He also attended the Celebrate CTE event, which hosted over 600 students receiving certificates.
  • California Community College Chancellor Eloy Oakley was the Commencement Speaker and he expressed how impressed he was with SRJC, calling the college a jewel of state system.
  • The June 1 President's Address was well attended and Suzie and Mike Marzalek were presented with the President's Medallion.
  • At the Friend of Petaluma Community Breakfast speaker Ali Afshar donated $5 thousand to SRJC.
  • He thanked the Board for their advocacy on behalf of SRJC to secure the $34M in funding for the upcoming STEM project. It was previously on chopping block by the state legislature, but through the Trustees' advocacy, it was added to the list for approval by the governor.
  • SRJC is currently undergoing challenges due to declining enrollment. The deficit increased from $3.4 million to $4 million based on the recent budget report from state legislature. He is working with his team on proposed budget cuts, which he is trying to keep away from the classroom.
  • He and staff members are working on increasing enrollment, which has already paid off this summer. Summer enrollment is up 6% and online is 13% up.
  • Additionally, the governor is creating an exclusively online community college, which will likely affect SRJC's enrollment as well.
  • He recognized the baseball team, which came in second in the state.
  • He recognized the performers in In the Heights, namely Joseph Miranda who also sang the National Anthem at Commencement and the President's Address.
